Putting the personal back into her clients’ marketing through the art of conversation

In this digital age, Amanda Gilmer talks about the inspiration behind her business and how Richardson Swift is helping her realise its full potential.

How did you start out?

My first job was for The Wiltshire Times in Trowbridge selling advertising over the phone. I worked my way up over the years and had kids, but with the birth of my fourth child, I decided to go freelance.

It was then that I started working for local town guides and business publications and got chatting to business owners. Many were complaining about their company databases and I quickly realised there was a great opportunity for a new telemarketing service, helping local SMEs with data cleansing and appointment setting.

I launched my business in 2001 working from offices by Pulteney Weir when I landed my first big contract for Business Link Swindon & Wiltshire and things really grew from there.

Who are your clients?

Over the years our services have become more specialised. Nowadays, we work with the Department for International Trade (DIT), large SMEs and London-based charities and membership organisations to help them learn more about their customers/members to improve retention rates, identify the best prospects, and accelerate sales.

In this digital age, Amanda Gilmer is putting the personal back into her clients’ marketing through the art of conversation. Here, she talks about the inspiration behind her business and how Richardson Swift is helping her realise its full potential.

Industry trends and results

In this digital age, people don’t say hello enough! There is real value in a call. Typically, we will achieve treble or quadruple the return on investment for our clients.

How did you meet Richardson Swift?

My previous accountant was retiring and introduced me to Richardson Swift. I met with Debbie Boulton and she was keen to help us switch to Xero cloud accounting, as well as assist with our long-term strategy.

Has cloud accounting helped?

In terms of our accounts, Xero has been a complete transformation. Previously, I had to wait for weeks after our month-end to see my profit and loss, whereas now I can logon and see a monthly management report immediately and pull off reports to share with my sales team.

We now send and record invoice payments digitally and everything is integrated with our bank account in real-time. Plus, there’s a cash flow forecasting tool, which draws in actual figures and real-time projections that we can update and manipulate.

I feel a lot more confident about how we’re doing as a business and where we need to focus. Also, having everything on Xero means we’re ready for Making Tax Digital, whilst the online security means our accounts are completely protected.

What do you like about working with Richardson Swift?

The personal service side of things is great! Debbie and the team talk the accounts through in an easy to understand way and their experience of working with business owners, like me, really helps. They’ve also made the business more tax efficient, especially around our year-end.
