Companies House Director Verification – What You Need to Know Before November 2025
From 18th November 2025, a major change comes into force that will affect all company directors, PSC’s (Person of Significant Control) and members of LLP’s in the UK. It will become a legal requirement to verify their identity with Companies House. This new rule is part of a wider government drive to combat fraud and improve the integrity of UK companies.
But it’s not just a box-ticking exercise – failure to verify is a criminal offence. If you do not complete the process in time:
- All directors, PSC’s or members could face fines or disqualification.
- The company itself will not be able to file documents at Companies House and the company or LLP may even be struck off.
That’s why it’s important to act now and avoid a last-minute rush.
Why Has This Change Been Introduced?
In recent years, there has been a growing problem with fraudulent companies being set up purely to commit crime. The government’s response is to make sure every director is verified and traceable, helping protect businesses, customers, and the wider economy. It will also help them to show more accurate information on the public register.
For most, the process will be straightforward – but leaving it until the deadline could risk delays.
How Do You Verify Your Identity?
There are three ways to complete your verification:
- Via a Gov.UK One account
- You may receive either a letter or an email from Companies House explaining how to set up an account so you can verify your identity.
- If you don’t get the letter or email, you can go to www.gov.uk/using-your-gov-uk-one-login
- Once set up you will need to verify your identity using a photographic form of ID such as a current passport or driving licence.
- This method is free.
- Via the Post Office
- This option only becomes available if your online verification fails.
- If that happens, you’ll be prompted to complete the check at a participating Post Office.
- This method is also free.
- Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
- You can ask a professional firm, such as Richardson Swift, to assist you with the checks and notify Companies House that you have been verified.
- We charge a small fee of £10 + VAT per person to cover the cost we incur.
- This is the easiest option as you will not have to set up a Gov.uk One account. We simply send you a link directly to the software we use to check ID which will just ask you to take a photo of your ID, followed by a selfie.
Why Act Now?
Although the deadline isn’t until November 2025, we strongly recommend getting verified sooner rather than later. Leaving it to the last minute could mean long delays, particularly if large numbers of directors try to register at once.
By acting early, you’ll ensure your company stays compliant and avoid the stress of being caught out.
